How to Trace if Your Item is Gold or Silver
How to check the purity of your gold?
You can use the hallmarks on your items to figure out how much they are worth. On rings, the hallmark is usually stamped on the inside of the band, on chains and necklaces, it is usually near or on the clasp, on bracelets, it is usually on the clasp or inside of the band, and on earrings, it is usually stamped on the post or back of the earring. You should look for markings such as 585, 750, or 999 to determine the amount of gold present; 999 denotes 24 karat gold, while 585 denotes 14 karat gold. You can also search for the sponsor mark from the manufacturer, refiner, or maker.
How to check the purity of your silver?
The markings will typically be marked with 800, 825, 830, or 850 if it is continental silver, indicating its varying silver content. The markings can be found in the same place on your jewelry as gold. EP or EPNS will be applied to silver plate with a low silver content. The 925 mark on sterling silver indicates that it is 92.5 percent pure. Anything marked 900 indicates 90% purity.
Do you know the level or gold or silver content?
Jewelry with a karat of 24 is 99.9 percent pure, or 0.999 fine, while jewelry with a karat of 14 contains 58.5% pure gold. The karat of your item indicates the percentage of precious metal in the item. The karat of your item is very important in estimating its value because the amount of metal in it determines its value.
